7. Question Formation – Yes/No & WH- Questions

In English, we form questions differently based on the type of question we want to ask. There are two main types:

  • Yes/No Questions (answer is “yes” or “no”)

  • WH- Questions (start with who, what, where, when, why, how)

🔹 A. Yes/No Questions

These questions use helping verbs (auxiliaries) or modals.

Structure:

Helping verb + subject + main verb + ?

1. With “to be”

  • Are you happy?

  • Is she at school?

  • Were they late?

2. With “do/does/did” (Present or Past Simple)

  • Do you like coffee?

  • Does he play football?

  • Did she call you?

3. With Modals

  • Can you swim?

  • Will she come?

  • Should I go?

❗ Note: In Yes/No questions, the helping verb comes first, then the subject.

🔹 B. WH- Questions

These start with a question word (who, what, where, when, why, how) and ask for specific information.

Structure:

WH-word + helping verb + subject + main verb + ?
