10. Punctuation Marks – Uses and Examples

 

🔹 A. Period (.)

  • Used to end a declarative sentence (a statement).

  • Used in abbreviations.

Examples:

  • I like apples.

  • Dr. Smith is here.


🔹 B. Comma (,)

  • Used to separate items in a list.

  • To separate clauses or ideas in a sentence.

  • After introductory words or phrases.

Examples:

  • I bought apples, oranges, bananas, and grapes.

  • If it rains, we will stay inside.

  • Yes, I will come.


🔹 C. Exclamation Mark (!)

  • Shows strong feeling or emotion (surprise, excitement, anger).

Examples:

  • Watch out!

  • That’s amazing!


🔹 D. Question Mark (?)

  • Used at the end of a direct question.

Examples:

  • What is your name?

  • Are you coming?


🔹 E. Colon (:)

  • Used before a list, explanation, or quotation.

Examples:

  • I need the following: eggs, milk, and bread.

  • He said: “I will be there soon.”


🔹 F. Semicolon (;)

  • Connects closely related independent clauses.

  • Separates items in a list when the items have commas.

Examples:

  • I have a big test tomorrow; I need to study.

  • The meeting included John, the manager; Lisa, the assistant; and Mark, the intern.


🔹 G. Apostrophe (’)

  • Shows possession.

  • Shows contraction (missing letters).

Examples:

  • Sarah’s book (possession)

  • It’s raining (contraction of “it is”)

  • Don’t (do not)


🔹 H. Quotation Marks (“ ”)

  • Used to show direct speech or quotations.

Examples:

  • She said, “I am tired.”

  • “Please help me,” he asked.


🔹 I. Parentheses ( )

  • Used to add extra information or clarification.

Examples:

  • He finally answered (after thinking for a while).

  • The capital of France (Paris) is beautiful.


🔹 J. Dash (—)

  • Shows a break in thought or adds emphasis.

Examples:

  • She was going to call you — but she forgot.

  • Everything—yes, everything—was perfect.


🔹 K. Hyphen (-)

  • Joins two words to make a compound word.

Examples:

  • Well-known author

  • Twenty-one
